Land Between the Lakes

The Tennessee Valley Authority’s 170,000 acre Land Between the Lakes, in western Kentucky and Tennessee, offers some excellent opportunities for camping, day hiking, and backpacking. All hikers are required to check in at any one of the three welcome stations located in the area. Topographic maps, trail brochures, and patches are all available at the welcome centers.

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park

A blending of wooded forest and beautiful lake awaits the camper at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park, set in the Cumberland Mountain foothills of south central Kentucky on one of Kentucky’s largest man-made lakes. The park consists of 147 improved sites, most with electric and water hookups, and has two central service buildings with laundry facilities and showers. Rates are posted. The park is open April through November. There are no advance registrations, and sites are rented on a first come basis.

Yatesville Lake State Park

Located on the banks of a 2,242 acre lake, Yatesville Lake State Park provides great opportunities for fishing, boating, and hiking. In addition to several hiking trails (including a 20-miler), the park has a 27 site regular campground, with a unique twist: its 20 primitive sites are either “boat-in” or “hike-in.” If your unit is looking for a practice location for a canoe trip, Yatesville Lake might be a good location to try!

Grayson Lake State Park

This 2,712 acre park is located on fifteen hundred acre Grayson Lake. The park features 71 campsites, boat launching facilities, a beach, and hiking trails. It is located six miles south of Grayson, KY. For Scouts, this park could serve as a base camp for hiking the Api-Su-Ahts Trail. The park is open year-round.

Breaks Interstate Park

Breaks Interstate Park is located in Pike County, Kentucky, and Buchanan and Dickenson Counties, Viriania. It is unique in the fact that it is managed by both the Virginia and Kentucky Departments of Parks. It has 5 trails ranging from 0.35 to 12 miles in length.

Camp Blanton

Camp Blanton used to be a Boy Scout camp, but is now privately managed. The camp is located five miles west of Harlan, KY, on US 119. It has a lake, and offers boating, canoeing, swimming, and fishing opportunities. The camp also has cabins, primitive campsites, and a five mile undeveloped trail to the unusual Knobby Rock.

Alum Ford Campground

This 6-site campground is located near Lake Cumberland – a beautiful lake rimmed by 300 foot cliffs. A trail leads to the 260 acre Yahoo Falls Scenic Area.

Cave Run Lake

Cave Run Lake is located within the scenic Eastern Highlands region of Kentucky in Bath, Rowan, Morgan, and Menifee counties. The 8,270-acre lake is surrounded by the northern-most section of the Daniel Boone National Forest. The lake is 60 miles east of Lexington, Kentucky, and can be accessed through Exits 123, 133, and 137 off Interstate 64.

Paintsville Lake State Park

This park is located adjacent to 1,140 acre Paintsville Lake. It can be found just off Highway 40, five miles northwest of Paintsville. The park has 10 primitive campsites, 32 RV campsites, a boat dock, and two hiking trails (totaling 8.6 miles). Laundry, restroom, and shower facilities are also available. The campgrounds are open year-round.
